[Cz-L] Re: czernowitz-l digest: December 26, 2009

I read your items, Hardy and Stanley, with great interest since we left in the spring of '39 and I missed all this.  My schoolmate from Scoala Elite, Hans Noe, son of our family doctor, remained in Cz and came out to New York in the early 1950s. 

Whenever I asked him about what took place in Cz during the war he would become vague and change the subject.  It was much later that I realized that he probably couldn't talk about it. 

But once, in reply, he recalled the Germans retreating from the advancing Russians and whenever they ran out of gas, he said, they would leave their vehicles and run on foot.  Apparently, they greatly feared the Russians who probably didn't take prisoners but just shot them.  Hans said, the streets of Cz started to fill with abandoned trucks and cars and motorbikes.
