Reminded of the years 1944 - 45, by the correspondence within the list, I
remembered what my parents decided to take with them when we left Czernowitz
and what they left behind. They obviously could not take any books. We had a
complete collection of Brehms Tierleben, 6 or 7 volumes of an animal
encyclopaedia, richly illustrated, which was much valued by the whole
family. My father burned it.
Into the fire also went the collected works of Shalom Aleichem and Mendele
Mocher Sfurim. Also Heine and Schiller. Also "Max und Moritz" by Wilhelm
Busch and the Children's poems by Christian Morgenstern.
A beautifully illustrated book of children's stories, which contained
a story about "Frau Wolke", a chubby rosy cheeked elderly woman, who lived
in the sky and every time she aired her pillows, which loosened the
feathers, it would snow on earth.

We also had a book on the life of bees and one, on the life of ants which I
had read with great interest. These were not illustrated and possibly not
meant for children. For years, I have tried unsuccessfully to remember the
name of these books and their author, I would like my grandchildren to read
them. If any of you have any suggestions as to which these books might have
been, please write me.

There also was a book of nonsensical poems, also illustrated, from which I
remember a poem about a rabbit which had been shot but was running on the
green lawn covered in snow and the sun was shining in the middle of the
night...

Do any of you remember this book?

Mimi
