I remember applying for one I am not quite sure of the exact date in 1944. It was at a Milizia Station in the Franzensgasse. The house once belonged to coffee beans roaster whose name I do not remember but who supplied Czernowitz with caffee. It was just around the corner of the Stefanigasse.
Once I applied for the Propuska the Natschalnik of the station mentioned that because we lived in the proximity of the station and he was in need of living quarter he will pay a visit before assumingly, the approval of the Propuska. Because also at that time people were paying out summs to get out, and at one stage many of these Propuskas were cancelled to the dismay of genuine applicants. The scene outside the militia were harrowing because of the multitude of people waiting to get the Propuska. It was a nightmarish game play, the officers would appear from a second floor window and call out the respective name and ask the to enter to collect.
Two days after I applied on behalf of my mother, my sister & myself the Natschalnik showed up "Eto Charscho" this is good quarter come tomorrow give my name you shall have the Propuska. My father was already in Siret. He fled from Swerdlowsk after being transported there, He came back crossing the Roumanian border as a that time it was still open. We packed whatever we could and joined a cart to the border area near Siret. We were accomodated?in a barn.We had to wait 2 days before we came to the actual crossing. The searches were thorough. Whoever had still something of value lost it very soon, also it looked like a snowy wonderland because feather cushions and covers were ripped open in these searches. Yes, Mimi my father had a wonderfull Yidisch Library it also included Goethe, Schiller, a wonderfull 6 volume edition of Graetz the story of antquities by Josefus Flavius, Talmud Babli and other books, we seem to have had a diet of Max und Moritz,
Struwelpeter ect. but we could not take anything and left everything behind. We made it across the border and were met by my Father
