I just received my Jan-March 2010 Event Schedule from the Center for Jewish
History, which is located in the YIVO Building in New York City. In it, I
found an event about Czernowitz. It reads:
"Czernowitz in Jewish Memory" Monday March 8, 6:30 p.m.
Panel Discussion: "Czernowitz--'Vienna of the East'--is the site of two
different powerful memories. To some, it was home to an assimilationist
Austo-German Jewish culture; to others, it was a hub for the creation of
modern Yiddish language and culture. A panel of historians and writers,
including Mariannne Hirsch and Leo Spitzer, the aughors of a new volume
entitled "Ghosts of Home: The Afterlife of Czernowitz in Jewish Memory,"
will discuss and debate the reconciliation of these two different memories
within the broader history of Jewish emancipation, assimilation and
resistance in Eastern Europe. CJH, LBI, YIVO....$15 general, $10 CJH, LBI,
YIVO members.
CJH is the Center for Jewish History; LBI is the Leo Beeck Institute.

Steve Lasky
