Hello all,
I have only recently received a copy of the personal notes of my great-grandfather's brother, Rudolf NEUMAN, who was born in 1895 in Zastavna and went to school in Czernowitz between 1904 to 1910. These make some very interesting reading; they also open up a few "roads" of research.
In his notes he writes that at the time, there were the following grammar schools in Czernowitz (I am taking these to be "Oberschule / Gymnasium", i.e. schools which one frequented from age 10 to 18, when one would sit the exam for "Matura"):
- one German school for boys
- one German school for girls
(he says these two were frequented mainly by children of civil servants and army officers)
- one Ukrainian-German school (which he frequented)
- one Romanian-German school
- one Polish-German school.
Would anyone by any chance know the names of these schools?
Also, he mentions that the owner of the cinema was a distant cousin - but he doesn't give any names. Does anyone happen to know more about the owner of the cinema in Czernowitz during that period?
Rudolf also mentions that Louis Bleriot was in Czernowitz in 1910, to present his new flying machine, and he says he was one of the scouts guarding Bleriot's aeroplane. I am wondering if there would be any account of this anywhere?
Thank you in advance for any hints you might be able to offer.
Kind regards,
Dana Dimitriu
