A few days ago we saw on Romanian TV a young singer who was talking
about the Joseph Schmidt International Canto Competition in Suceava,
mentioning Joseph Schmidt as "the Romanian" tenor. Rather upsetting,
especially as he was born in 1904, when Davideni, his birthplace and
Czernowitz, where he actually grew up, were still definitely Austrian,
the K.u.K. monarchy. So even nowadays, Bukowina is considered by some as
a part of Romania.
Am copying this to Frank Rothert from Köln,who is soon finishing a
documentary film on Schmidt, having researched for almost four years,
interviewed persons in the US, Israel and Europe.
Another Schmidt connaissseur, Leonid Fleiderman a Czernowitz native ,
who now lives in Moscow, showed, two years ago, in Berlin, a most
interesting and complex presentation of films and photographs and talked
to us about a festival and competition entitled Joseph Schmidt which
should take place alternatively, once in Berlin (where Schmidt started
his international career) and once in Czernowitz. We discussed his idea
but did not manage yet to find enough support from official
sources and private sponsors. Basically this idea is much more
appropriate than the event in Suceava because in Berlin it would reach a
much larger and international audience. It would certainly draw the
attention of culturally interested circles in Europe and the United
States and with regard to Germany it would get a political dimension as
well.
