Thanks to Hardy for translating for us.
I have forgotten most of the Romanian, I ever knew and do not understand the
meaning of many of the words describing professional pursuits.
While I had not idea that "drotar de oale " was a wire mender of pottery,
I well remember the work done by these professionals. In Czernowitz, or at
least in my family, milk was always boiled in an earthenware pot, which was
used only for this purpose. It was a tall but not particularly large pot,
glazed inside and out and surrounded outside with wire, twisted to form an
octagonal net. This wire net was twisted very tightly and prevented the pot
from expanding, shrinking and breaking as it was heated and cooled.
The "drotar" would come by regularly, announcing his presence on the street
in a loud sing-song and all the housewives would bring him their pots, to
have the wires tightened.
Which reminds me of a Czernowitz joke:
Yente borrowed an earthenware pot from Chanzye.
Subsequently, they had a fight and Chanzye accused Yente of not returning
the pot, or returning it broken. Yente defended herself by saying:
In the first place, I never borrowed a pot from Chanzye.
Second, I did return the pot, the following day. I returned it in good
order, not even with a crack. Third: Chanzye accuses me of breaking her pot.
I did not break it, it was already broken when I borrowed it.
