I found my father Mendel Weisinger, name correct, street correct but profession was"macelar" butcher when in fact he should have been furrier. However its quite a feat.
When I visited Czernowitz I asked for a copy of my birth certificate. I was shown the original register of entries and recognised the handwriting as the original entry I had on my certificate. The copy I received was crude and incorrect. I could never have used it in any way.
I do not understand the difficulties. The clerk I spoke to mentioned that some month before the retreat of the Roumanians the city archives were taken to Bucharest and then after the new borders were established returned to the city. The archives were not destroyed but removed, preserved and returned. Therefore I believe there should be more accurate information about the inhabitants of Czernowitz to 1940. As for the years 1940 to 1944 the archives should just as well have been preserved in the same manner but not made available for perusal where inhabitants were listed as deported or such things. Maybe an approach to the City Authorities
could facilitate more accurate information.

All,
More and more members are now convinced that there are
people missing.
As only 30,000 out of 130,000 inhabitants are covered the only plausible
conclusion is that the number of the number of missing
entries is about 100,000. ( 130,000 - 30,000).
(As pointed out by Berti).
Now to the 30,000 entries (or 33,000 as per Edgar) :
Typing these onto spread sheets ,you know what it takes ?
Consider one entry - avg. 50 letters and spaces = 20sec.
33,000 entries x 20 sec. = 660,000 sec
In hours :360 = 1833 hours
in days : 8 hours/day = 230 days
This is over half a year's job if you dont work overtime.
All this without proof reading and corrections.
Or I made a gross miscalculation.
Check me out.
