Widow Feuer's tenant.
Widow Feuer lived in our house on Russischegasse .
Her flat was on first floor -inside court.
We didn't see very much of Widow Feuer.
She would go out in the morning and return by noon.
She always carried a big bag with her.
She was middle aged and always dressed in grey or brown with a Tichel
(headscarf) on her head.
Her means of support were obscure. She had no friends or relatives.
Nobody visited her. Her married life took place long before my time and was
a
mystery to most.
Her only income was is selling things from the house , like so many did.
Then there was nothing more left for selling.
Soon after the Russians came back she let one of her two rooms
to a Russian girl . Maria was young and pretty.
It soon turned out that Maria was a hooker.
From the morning hours she would hustle Russischegasse for customers and
tow them in to widow Feuer's apartment .
Old Mrs. Pomeranz the "Hag" from second floor soon spied her out.
As she sat all day on the "Gang" on first floor she started keeping count
of the
customers : "This is number nine today , not bad for eleven oclock" she
said .
To make the count easier she later used beans. She put a bean for every
customer
on the parapet of the gangway.
If a customer would not leave on time she would mutter : "What does he
think,
He moved in for good ? ".
One day Maria fished a Mlatche Levtenant ( sub-lieutenant ), young and
a little drunk and as soon as he got inside the apartment he started a big
scandal.
He shouted and Maria shouted and then the door flung open and Maria flew
out.
Widow Feuer stayed in .
After 15 minutes the Russian left , humming a song .
Maria went back in and there was quiet in our courtyard.
Half an hour later widow Feuer came out and walked to the center of
our court .
Old Mrs. Pomeranz couldn’t believe her eyes – widow Feuer was smoking
a cigarette .
Hardy
.
Note .
Most of this story is based on fact :
There was a widow.
There was a russian girl.
She was a hooker.
There was an old gossip.
The last episode with the russian officer is fiction.
I made this up to make Mrs. Pomeranz burst with envy
