Nice story Hardy.
And since you mentioned a hooker, I would like to tell a true story about
two Romanian Freudenmaedchen and a woman of doubtful repute.
When the ghetto was dissolved at the end of November or early December 1941,
we had no place to live. A Romanian family by the name of Grecu had moved
into the house we had lived in during the "Russian time", after having to
leave our own home, so as not to be identified as "Burjui" by the Soviets.
One of my parents' friends invited us to move in with her, and for close to
a year we lived at Strada Luta #42C, which we always called Slowackigasse.
Some time in the fall of 1942 two Freudenmaedchen had moved into one of the
apartments on the street level floor. I liked them very much; they bought me
and my friend Herbert, candies and at a time when Jews were limited to being
outdoors only between 10AM and 5PM and preferred not to go out at all, they
took the two of us for long walks. They wore nice clothes, used make up
liberally and smelled of Eau de Cologne. Herbert being a year older than I,
learned Romanian from them and explained to me, that in Romanian all words
meant the opposite of what they meant in German, for instance; cold in
German is "kalt", but "kalt" in Romanian means warm. Actually the Romanian
word was "cald", but it made for a good story. Occasionally the two young
women, also painted my fingernails and once they painted my lips with
lipstick. My parents did not mind, but my mother's brother who lived with
us, gave me a sound spanking and forbade me to go to the Freudenmaedchen.
But he could not shelter me for long. On the second floor lived a woman, who
was having an affair with a married man. One day, just as my mother and I,
were on the staircase of the building, his wife appeared, pounded on the
door of the woman on the second floor and started screaming at both her
husband and at the woman. All in perfectly understandable German, even to
a five year old.
