My uncle was a student and thus member of the Hasmonea Student Club.
He had a white uniform and cap and of course a rapier.
This was a pointed sword used in duels in old times.
On what did you duel ? On matters of honor , public insults ,opinions ,
declarations , girls.
Things that had to be settled only by duelling.
This was new to the jewish students who were used to settling disputes
by open street swearing.
Getting hurt in a duel was a sign of honor coveted by everyone.
The scar resulting from a hit was called a "smite" (Schmiss in german),
and was seen as
a badge of honour. Best location was on the cheek.
You could have one tatooed but it was not the same.
My uncle tried to explain all these to my Granny ( Die groisse Babe),
who had to finance
all this but she didnt understand the importance of the scar.
Generation gap.
