Sometime around 1930 my uncle Paul Reifer also fought a duel in Czernowitz.
One of his classmates had claimed that his fiancé was not good looking.
Actually, she was very beautiful and my uncle certainly thought so. He
challenged the offender to a duel and did get a slash on his face.
But this was not the end of the story. The news of the duel had proceeded
my uncle to his home. When he arrived there, my grandfather, a former
corporal in the Austro-Hungarian army, with a formidable mustache and a
temper to match, awaited his son with a whip and let him know what he
thought of duels.
