Are Czernowitzers Romanian? The question is, are Romanians Romanian?

I was an actor in my youth in theatre and radio and later in TV and films, and I specialized in accents and dialects. At that time I became aware of a strange phenomenon. In English there is no such thing as a discernible Romanian accent. Every Romanian who speaks English seems to have a different accent. Not only that, there is no such thing as a typical Romanian "look."

In the late 1950s I worked briefly with Wilbur Streech who was an ex-Disney animation man but had a small studio on 52nd Street in Manhattan where we produced live action film. We often had actors drop by to leave their pictures and resumes.

One day, at noon, the receptionist was at lunch and I saw a tall Irishman come in so I stepped out into the lobby to see what he wanted. He had pronounced Irish features and I thought I heard a bit of a brogue in his speech. He wanted to leave his pictures and resume. I said to him, "I bet they always call you to play Irish cops." He smiled modestly and nodded.

"So where are you from?" I asked, meaning was he from Dublin or Belfast or what?
His answer was, "Bucharest."

In 1994, the only time I visited Romania since leaving in the spring of 1939, an official in a bedraggled uniform at the airport in Bucharest looked at my passport, brightened, and looked up to say in a heavily accented English, "But you're one of us!"
I said, "Da," but I wondered if he would have said that in 1941.
