Dear friends of the List,
Loved Andrew Halmay's story.
Born in Bucharest after the war, I had to learn French, at home (against
my will), and at school. Knowing Romanian probably helped.
Later, after emigrating to England I learnt English quite fast, thanks
to German maybe, and found it easy to learn another Latin language,
Spanish.
Italian is child's play for Romanian speakers, just look at a newspaper
or a book and you will find about 70-80% words with common roots, if not
more.
Bi-lingual generations are lucky in this respect - each language is a
world in itself and an enrichment, whatever the history of the country.
And as to Andrew's Irish "look" - of course, one does meet people who
look "like" someone else from somewhere else.
However, when we visited Rome for the first time we were struck by the
familiar look of many people in the street, not too tall, mostly dark,
loud, they really reminded us very much of the Romanians we knew. The
Romans had definitely colonized "Dacia".
Needless to say, we felt quite at home.
Gabriele
