I agree with Cornel. My father was raised in a orthodox family who moved to
Czernowitz from Kolomiya, Galizia in 1901 and lived a religious life from
the first day I remember him. He spoke a good German and I had practically 2
mother languages: Yiddish and German. We read the daily Morgenblatt in
German. His parents sent him away from Czernowitz at the outbreak of the war
in 1914, because he wanted to volunteer to the Austrian Army before being
drafted due to his young age and they tried to prevent him from that. Their
social status was middle class: a store in the Postgasse opposite the
Hauptpost and a respectable house in the Dreifaltigkeitsgasse 17.
