Does anyone know the etymology of the name Czernowitz? I haven't found
one so far but I suspect the name comes from Russian (Czerno =
Tschiorney = black) and I don't know what is black there.

A somewhat related place name in Romania, Cernavoda on the Danube is
easily related to Tschiornaya Voda = Black water.
