Czernowitz, - Etymology.
Chern = Forest (Russian).
Chernovitsy , Chern-na-vitse, that is Chern on the Prut ,
the timber rafting of wood of the beech species along the river Prut .
According to its meaning apparently meant beech woods on the Prut.
Then came the chauvinistic Ukraineans and "Ukrainianized"
Chernovitsi to Chernivtsi like they did to Lwow (Lviv)
Tarnopol(Ternipil) and more.
