Dear Edgar,
I am immensely grateful to you for measuring the total size of the cemetery,
as well as the area cleared so far and the photographs taken of well marked
points. Till you took these measurements, I relied on the Chernivtsi
cemetery administration and on my own approximate calculations to determine
the size of the cemetery. I now realize that these were inaccurate, because
they included the mass grave to the Romanians killed in 1940 or 1941 and
also areas at the northern and western part of the cemetery, which may have
initially been part of the area allocated to the cemetery, but effectively,
now are not, because they are occupied by commercial buildings and/or never
had any graves placed in them.
I knew which areas had been cleared of sapling trees and vines, by April 23,
when Sasha Wolloch was in Czernowitz and photographed the area cleared by
then, but now to my pleasant surprise, I find that about one extra hectare
has been cleared in the last two and a half weeks and work is proceeding on
the next hectare.
Many, many thanks and enjoy Stanislav.
In about 1880, one of my great-grandfathers, Motel Fruchter, moved from
there to Klivodyn, just north of Czernowitz.
