Re Anny's dog and Mrs. Popovici, let me say a few words.
When I was between five and seven, we visited my paternal grandparents in Arad and there I met some cousins or friends who had the most beautiful Great Dane dog. The dog was going to have puppies and they promised to give me a puppy.
Later my parents told me that the puppy had run away at the railway station as they were about to bring him or send him to me. (Eine Geschichte) I doubted the story then and later, when I grew up, I realized, of course, that they had lied to me. Parents do that sometimes with children. I have never lied to my children but Europeans had a tendency to look at "das Kind," as not quite a person.
There is absolutely no reason to doubt what Anny has told us. Memories can play tricks but a dog to a child is bigger than family and all that was involved in the experience is never forgotten.
It is possible, however, that Anny's parents fibbed to her because for one reason or another they wanted to get rid of the dog.
It is also possible that Mrs. Popovici had a larcenous bent. It wouldn't be the first time in history that the spouse of a saintly individual has taken advantage of the spouse's power or celebrity in less than acceptable ways.
I have a distant relative who had stature in Israel whose wife, unbeknown to him did something illegal which came back to damage his reputation. Right here in Toronto I know the divorced wife of a Hollywood movie star who tried to trade off on his and their son's fame to the point where the son publicly chastised her.
None of these possibilities are palatable but none of them blemish Popovici, the man.
We'll never have a full answer so there is no point in sweating about it. It calls for a shrug and no more.
Cheers,
Andy
