Dear All,
Thanks go to Hardy for sending us these photographs which appeared on
livejournal.com/whasup.
I wonder who in Chernivtsi took this photograph.
In the last two weeks it has been raining there almost every day and many of
the old stones seem to be covered by algae, mold and moss. Not desirable for
the maintenance of the stones.
Cornel is right that it is not enough to cut the sapling trees, bushes and
vines, they need to be prevented from growing back. Last year the cemetery
administration had the cleared areas sprayed with herbicides. This year it
seems that the herbicides they used, have gone up in price and they claim
they cannot afford to buy them.
The active ingredient in the herbicide they used last year is named
Glyphosate and is being manufactured by Monsanto.
Dr. Bursuk and I are now negotiating with Monsanto to give us a quantity of
either "Roundup Max" or "Roundup Extra" free of charge or at a reduced
price, so we can spray the cemetery.
Monsanto does from time to time donate herbicides for public works and
charitable purposes. I hope they will do so this time. At the same time I am
looking into the possibility of using other herbicides.
This fall, probably in October or November, we plan to have the mature
Norway Maples which grow in the cemetery and are the source of all the
thousands of sapling trees, cut down, thereby preventing new seedling from
coming up.
It is not our aim to prevent any vegetation from growing in the cemetery and
the indiscriminate use of herbicides will not continue, but we want to kill
all invasive plants. "Invasive plants" are those plants which grow and
spread very rapidly and aggressively, are difficult to control and generally
are not native to the area in which they are considered "invasive".
I will be very happy if more members of this list, take an active interest
in how to eradicate the invasive plants which grow in the cemetery and also
in planning for a suitable grass or groundcover to plant in the cemetery, so
as to maintain the cemetery in the future with a maximum of appropriate care
and a minimum of expense .
