Old Czernowitz is an Austrian town. This cannot be changed.
Bukovina was originally Moldovian with a considerable Rumanian presence.
In Czernowitz they were a minority.
The majority was Jewish ,who became Austrian patriots and adopted
German as their language.
They had it easily as Yiddish speakers -Yiddish stems from German.
All other minorities did not have this advantage .
Whatmore the Jews had their best time during Austrian rule.
In 1918 came the Rumanians and brought romanization.
Streetnames got romanized getting names of romanian dignitaries
and had no significance to us.
And the Jews had to learn a new language:
"Eu am avut, tu ai avut " this is rumanian for "to have" in the past.
The Jews jocosely conjugated:
" Ich hab a Wut , du hast a Wut " meaning I'm in a rage...
We certainy were !
