By the time I was born, Czernowitz had been Cernauti and Romanian for
19years. I lived in Czernowitz for the first 8 years of my life, during 6 of
these the city was part of Romania. Yet I did not even know the name of the
street I lived on in Romanian. We spoke German, read German and Romanian was
used only when speaking to Romanians or when telling a joke which had to be
told in Romanian. Most Czernowitzers spoke some Ruthenian and many
Ruthenians spoke some Yiddish.

To this day, the Volksgarten is the Volksgarten, The Karolinengasse is the
Karolinengasse, the Herrengasse is die Herrengasse.

This is not a case of "Istanbul was once Constantinopolis".
