My parents were from Czernowitz, and I had the chance to be born there in 1945, after their return from Transnistria. Of course, German was the only language we spoke in the family. In 1946 we moved in Romania; my parents were school teachers in a little town in Transylvania. There, speaking German was rather exotic, so my father was once asked: “How can you speak German, after all the evil the Germans did to you?” My father answered: “As a matter of fact, the Romanians did deport us to Transnistria, not the Germans”.
