I just received a wonderful present; a book about Avigdor Arikha,
his drawings and paintings, put out by Phaidon.

The book contains a short biography, some photographs of the artist and his
family and many, many reproductions.

Among the photographs there is one, showing the artist as a young child, in
1932, walking with his father and sister on the Herrengasse.

Some of the reproductions are of drawings he made during the transportation
to Transnistrtia and in the camps of Transnistria. These are the drawings of
a young boy, without pretensions to style and art and therefore all the more
impressive. Some reproductions are of his abstract paintings, these are dark
and somber. Most of the reproductions are of his figurative paintings and
drawings. These are full of light and show a realistic, yet very emotional
and romantic attitude. Something you might expect from someone who grew up
in Czernowitz.

We were not ignorant of evil, ugliness and sorrow, but we enjoyed whatever
we could and we aspired to beauty, to romance and to what we called
" das Erhabene".
