Hi Mimi...I do not think our Czernowitzers would object to a few sheep
helping to keep the cemetery clear, and there are many precedents for this in
similar situations. I see a much more annoying problem in keeping out the
poachers!!! Cornel

Hello David,

I do not know the intricacies of religious Jewish law as it pertains to
cemeteries, but I think that most of us Czernowitzers
would not be too happy about your suggestion. I know I am not, even though I
do not mind that some of my ancestors who
are interred in small village cemeteries are kept clear by having goats
graze in the area.
Your plan does not fit with my idea of Czernowitz and I think that
Chernivtsi city officials would not like it either.
Consider also that the cemetery is visited by tourists (not just relatives
of the deceased) and that one way of ensuring
that it is maintained in the future is to stress its artistic and cultural
importance.

Chernivtsi may be a relatively small town, of about 200 000 inhabitants, but
the image it has and wants to cultivate,
is of a center of culture. A sheep pasture is not part of this image.

Mimi
