Hardy...just for once you are wrong!! Czernowitz under the Soviets was
difficult to get to,but it was certainly possible. In 1964 I took my car,a
Russian-born colleague named Pavel Kornianski...(who became a well-known
psychiatrist in Melbourne under the name of Paul Kornan)..and 3 girls and
drove from London. Via Czechoslovakia and through Cluj, where we had an
amazingly good local version of Mamaliga with cheese and fruit built -in,and
we gave the waitress a tip which made the waitress start kissing us! It was
not much for us but we later worked out that we gave her about 3-4 weeks
pay.We had booked everything through Intourist. The border between Romania
and Ukraine was a wide ploughed strip of land..so they could check for
footprints of illegal bordercrossers, and watchtowers with armed guards on
the Soviet side. Photography was strictly forbidden...so we sent out one of
our female travellers named Norma, wearing short shorts and a tight
sweater, and while the binoculars were focused on her our cameras got very
busy!! Intourist had us staying in a sort of Youth Hostel which was actually
quite comfortable..and there were places to eat.We got friendly with some
local talent and got taken swimming at the Valya Kozmy, and there too was a
"budke" with nice food. Interestingly,we met some elderly Jewish people to
whom I spoke in German, and when Paul asked how come they spoke such good
German the answer was" aber naturlich, wir sind doch Oesterreicher!! And
this was a few years after 1918!!!! Cornel

The sidewalk cafes business in Cz. is booming.
On the Herrengasse alone 8 cafes are now in operational.
The name "cafe" is misleading : they are restaurants in all respects.
And this on Herrengasse alone - there are many more around.
I remember tales from tourists from the Soviet era where stray
tourists didnt find a single restaurant in town. There were'nt any.
There were some workers canteens (stolovaya).
Czernowitz was restricted area - out of bounds for tourists.
If some locals read this post - please tell us more about this period.
Arthur too visited Soviet Cz - please give us the story .

Hardy
