Hi Mimi, I must contradict you...the litterary trial" was not a children's
play...The children's play was "Staedte raten" to guess towns, one of the
childrens named a letter from the alphabeth and who knows a geographical
name with this letter.or an other game: Alle Voegel fliegen, all the birds
are flying. the children sat down on the floor or around a table and one,
the eldest, said "ll the birds are flying, and all the children raised the
arms,, than suddenly he told all the books are flying, and some of them
raised automatically the arms, these must give a "Pfand"gage, than for every
gage they must do something...this remind me on the Pfaenderspiel, when, as
teenager for the gage you must kiss a boy...
but, now for the litterary tryal: we were already teenager, it was in th mid
30-ies, the zionists students associations had their
appartements, called "Bude", there were hold the "trials" about the novels
of Feuchwanger, Stefan Zweig, the new edited novels from Jewish, than famous
writer..one of the students was the lawyer, an other was the jugje, and we
discussed about the books. You must know that what Paul Celan said about
Czernowitz, there lived people and books, is 1000% true....
I am sorry to say, but today, in whatever country you will go, you will
never find so many bookshops like in Czernowitz...
Have a nice trip, dear Mimi, and a "Salut" for my town..Hedwig

I do not know who invented the idea of what in my childhood, we called the
"literary trial", which is what Edgar writes about the children at the
summer-camp in Vijenca doing.
This was a very popular children's or teenager's game.
A well known personality who's deeds were in moral dispute, would be brought
to trial. For instance Shabtai Tzvi. One child would role play the accused,
another was the prosecutor, another the defense, one the judge and a few the
jury. It allowed children to debate justice and morals, learn history and
role play.
