Dear All,
Christian's photographs show how beautiful and unique some of the
gravestones in the Czernowitz/Chernivtsi Jewish cemetery are. It also shows
that many of these stones are in danger of falling and breaking.
As more and more of the cemetery is cleared of sapling trees, bushes and
vines, it is time to think about the next step in restoring and maintaining
this cemetery, which is the preservation of individual stones, at least
those of greatest artistic value.
To preserve these stones we shall need professional advice and financial
help. If any of you have any ideas or advice about whom we can apply to for
such help, please let me know.
Eventually we may need to set up a committee or organization for the
preservation of the artistically valuable gravestones. At least currently,
CJCRO is concentrating its efforts on removing all the weedy vegetation and
securing the path of the cemetery.
In the next few days, I will write and send a report on how the work at the
cemetery is proceeding to the membership of CJCRO.
