Hi all! Have just come back from Czernowitz and thought some bits of
information may be useful. I also have photos..but my camera-to-computer
cable has vanished,so as soon as I have a replacement I will send to Uncle
Jerome to put on the website! First...Mimi,Christian and Arthur,it was fun
meeting you at the Magnat Lux, pity for the short time! Now,a find...the
cemetery administration people have found a bunch of missing registry
books,including the 1941 volume,so I succeeded in finding my father's grave
at last. There are new staff..and they seem very helpful!! The work being
done by the volunteers is excellent,but...and it is a big but...the cemetery
area is just on 12000 squ.meters and large areas incl where my father is are
covered in reeds and bushes to the extent that to get there I had a man with
a machete to cut a way through. There is a huge amount of work still to be
done. Next...the city has put up a statue of Kaiser Franz Josef on
the Ferdinandplatz, and they are going to restore the "Kriegerdenkmal" to
the 41st Infantry .The base is still there..and there are fresh flowers and
occasional wreaths being left...and 1918 was a long time ago! When I asked
locals why all this " if it wasn't for the Empire this town would not be
what it is"!!!! On the corner of Herrengasse and Hakman there is a
very interesting museum of local history which also has Jewish
exhibits..well worth seeing. The Jewish Museum we helped to establish is
doing well, has some interesting books for sale on local history and seems to
be getting a steady flow of visitors...when I was there they had people who
had crossed from Romania specifically to see it. And finally, the food at
places like Knaus and Grig's is still amazingly good and by English,American
or Israeli standards absolutely dirt cheap. Cornel
