Dear Arthur,
Thanks so much for sharing your memories, experiences, and photos. I know
how moving it was for me to be part of the SVIT cemetery group in 2008 and
to discover the graves of my ggparents, of whom I had known virtually
nothing, and also records in the archives relating to my grandmother and
aunt, whom I'd known well in the 1950's and 60's. I can hardly imagine what
it must be like to go back to the scene of such powerful and painful
memories.
If you feel comfortable sharing them, I would be interested in reading more
details of your memories of those years. In any case, I hope you have or
will pass what you remember along to someone who will preserve them. You say
you are not a writer, but I think you have eloquently described your
experiences.
In Massachusetts, where I live, a survivor (Sonia Weiss, she also wrote a
book called I Promised I would Tell) created a local Holocaust Center, and,
a couple of years ago, created what is called the Legacy Project. Volunteers
are paired with survivors, whose stories are taped. The volunteer meets at
least once with the survivor, then creates a presentation of his or her
story to be presented at least a couple of times a year, at schools,
libraries, any appropriate settings. We also pledge to pass the committment
along to another person when we are no longer able to continue presenting
it. I have been paired with a woman in her 80's who survived the war hidden
in France.
In the meantime, due to my visit to Czernowitz, I have learned more about my
own family's experience, particularly a cousin whom I knew as a teenager,
who now lives in Israel. Her terrible story of her trip to a camp from CZ as
a child, with her mother was documented by our cousin Nick Martin, one of
the founders of this list. It's on the EHPEs site. I had never known
anything of her history, or the rest of my grandparent's siblings who were
lost.
I wanted to recommend to list members a very beautifully written book, in
English (but probably translated too), called The Lost, the Search for Six
of Six Million. The author, a New Yorker named Daniel Mendlesohn, went on a
quest to find out what had happened to his great uncle's family, who had
stayed behind when the rest of the family emigrated to the U.S. They were
from Bolechov, between Lviv and Cz. I may have mentioned it here before,
and a lot of you may know of it, but it bears repeating.
A couple of other things:
Thanks for the pictures of this year's group of volunteers. I wanted to
point out that one volunteer, Marina, is a local woman who heard about our
group when we were clearing the cemetery in 2008 and came to join us. She
helped me locate my relatives' graves on the last day of our stay, using
machetes, etc, and also offered to keep my family graves cleared. She
participated last year too, I believe, so she would be the only person who
has worked on the project every summer. (not counting Mimi and Christian.)
The pictures on your album are wonderful. The one of your mother and you is
beautiful in addition to being so poignant.
Speaking of pictures, Mimi, the picture of you is also wonderful. And not
just because of the beautiful ironwork, it is just a beautifully composed
picture, and a very nice one of you.
Regards to all, Joanna Liss
