Shana Tova, Everybody!

Hardy, in my first four years of school, at Scoala Elite, if memory serves me right, we had German and French classes every day. I'm not sure we had it in the state-run liceum. I had only had a few months in grade five in that school.

During recess in school a boy slapped me once, in return I punched him and as I swung I knocked a jam sandwich out of the hand of another boy. The sandwich stuck itself on a newly whitewashed wall. They threw me out of school for two weeks and my dad said, to hell with them, you are not going back to that Fascist school.

We already had plans set to emigrate to Canada. He got me a tutor to come to our home for a few months. In April of 1939 we left. I can still read Fraktur or what they call deutsche Schrift (even if I no longer understand all the words)

Andy Halmay,
