Hi Everyone,
Earlier my cousin Stan posted regarding letters he has from his grandfather's brother (both of whom hail from Czernowitz) to his mother, in 1938, relating to his mother's bringing his daughter to the United States from Vienna, where they lived. Several of you indicated a willingness to help us translate the letters. I have them scanned so I will gladly transmit to anyone who wants to take a stab at it. We would be most appreciative.
As a side note, the daughter that the letters were written about, did come to the US sponsored by Stan's mother, and survived the Holocaust although, unfortunately her parents did not. We lost touch with her shortly after she came over, certainly by 1940 or so and part of our quest, after rediscovering the letters was to find her. I write to encourage everyone looking for family to think out of the box sometimes. I searched Ancestry.com and Jewishgen for her but under her maiden name found very little. I got to thinking about what would happen if family were lost in the war, or if you wanted to seek reparations from the loss, what would you do? It turns out that there are several organizations that help people who are trying to do just that. One such group is:
Dokumentationsarchiv des Oesterreichischen Widerstands,
Documentation Archive of Austrian Resistance

They had a Shoah search that actually had Stan's grandfather's brother listed and his wife, (whose name we did not previously know) and their dates of birth including that they were born in Cz. But even better, when I emailed them, they got back to me right away and advised that, although they did not have any records, there were obtainable records for the reparations application AND the emigration application of the daughter (the cousin we were seeking) plus they gave me her married name, which was given in the application. This married name, after a quick Google search, and a few phone calls, lead us to her family, her son and his sons! We are reconnected!!! Additionally, the DOEW forwarded my request on and I received a week later, a scanned copy of the emigration application in which are listed the names and addresses of other relatives, including Stan's mom, that were in the US. More leads to finding our family members!! I hope this is helpful. All the best, this is a great list!
