Prior to WWI Czernowitz was not an exceptionally large town. Sadagora
, which had a train station was probably larger. After the war a major
train station was built in Czernowitz and there was a tremendous influx
of people from around Bukovina and beyond. Certainly my ancestors
lived in Bukovina before 1850 (late 1700's) and moved, not too far, to
Czernowitz in the 1870's.
I am in possession of a family tree that traces my ancestral line to
the EARLIEST KNOWN RABBI IN SADAGORA, YOSEF MOSHE LIQUORNIK. I have a
few relatives that have a similar tree from Yosef to them, and one
relative, 7 generations removed from me, that has a Passover cup from
him. Rabbi Yosef died in Sadagora on 24 Tishri, 5562 (1802). His
son, Yesheyahu, was also rabbi of Sadagora until he passed away on 12
Cheshban, 5589 (1833). Prior to living in Sadagora Rabi Yosef was
known as the Maggid of Komarno (near Lvov), and was born in Ostrog (E.
of Brody).
After living in Sadagora many of ancestors in Teresheny, Bojan,
Kolomyya, Neu-Zuckska, Suceava, Goru Hormala, Radautz, and many in
Czernowitz.
I am lucky to be in possession of this family tree. There are many
other Liquornik/Likwornik's that do not know what their ancestry is but
I believe they are probably related to me. Do you know where your
ancestors came from?

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] Jewish roots in Czernowitz
OK, there may have been Jews in Czernowitz before it became part of the
Austrian empire.
But I think that in the period from 1850 till 1944, very, very few
Jewish Czernowitzers were
the descendants of Jews who had lived in Czernowitz before 1774 or
1775.
Since members of this list constitute a relatively random sample of
Czernowitzer Jews,
It would be interesting to find out if any can trace their ancestors as
living in Czernowitz,
earlier than 1850.
