Dear Czernowitzers,
Although I am a faithful daily follower of the news and discussions of =
the Czernowitz-L since last March when I joined the e-mail group, this =
is the first time that I address you all.
I feel a part of the group and I sent my picture to Merle.
Because of that and also because of the email sent by Fred Weisinger, I =
feel motivated to write a few lines about me and my Czernowitzer =
background.=20
My name is Sally Bendersky Schachner, first generation born in Chile. My =
father, Israel Bendersky, was born in Argentina to parents who had =
arrived as children from Bessarabia during the Baron Hirsch emigration =
to Argentina. He came to Chile as a young boy and settled here. My =
mother, Haiah, Clara in Chile, was born in 1922 to Mendel Stenzler and =
Sally Schachner in Czernowitz. My mother's last name is Schachner, not =
Stenzler, so presumably my grandparents never married according to any =
of the continually changing state laws at the time of the First World =
War and a little later. My uncle Herman Schachner came to Chile a short =
time before WWII, but unfortunately did not manage to bring my =
grandmother and my mother before they were forced to move into the =
guetto in Czernowitz and later deported to Transnistria. Of the two =
women, only my mother survived. She came to Chile in 1947 and soon after =
married my father, who was a widower with a baby who lost his mother at =
birth. My mother got pregnant immediatly after her wedding and gave =
birth to twins, of which I am one. Some years later, our younger sister =
was born. My twin brother and my sister made aliyah in 1970. He, Sammy, =
has ever since lived in Haifa. My sister, Marta, settled later in the =
United States. She lives in New Jersey since 1977. Curiously enough, my =
first husband and father of my children, Jonny Heiss Schmidt, is also =
the son of Czernowitzers. His grandfather was the famous singer Yosef =
Smith's brother. Jonny was also very happy to join the group and he =
did write about his personal story, so you already know about our two =
children, Claudia and Jaime and our three grandchildren. =20

My mother, Haiah or Clara, passed away in late 2006. Her father, Mendel, =
died when she was a baby and she had very little information about him. =
I was fortunate to spend six years in Israel serving as the ambassador =
of Chile between 2000 and early 2006, where I had the opportunity of =
meeting some Stenzlers whom I had met in previous trips to Israel =
(actually they had Hebrew names, like Ben Dror) and others whose =
existence was not known to me and was discovered by chance while in =
Israel. Nevertheless, my mother gave us very lean accounts of her =
biography and all her sufferings, and I probably did not pay enough =
attention to the names of places she might have told us about. So, =
ultimately, I do not know exactly where in Transnistria she was taken to =
and when and where my grandmother died of typhoid fever.=20

I would greatly appreciate if Fred or any other member of this community =
has some information about the Stenzlers and the Schachners in =
Czernowitz (I know one of my grandfather Mendel's brother was Meir =
Stenzler).=20

I visited Czernowitz in 2002. Apparently it has changed a lot since =
then. I searched for my grandfather's tomb at the cemetery but there was =
no one to ask where or how to look and now I know that my goal of =
finding his gravestone was very naive.

Congratulations for the marvelous community that you have built, for the =
contributions of so many of you in the enrichment of our knowledge about =
our heritage, and I want to share with you my pride in being a member =
of this group.

All the best to every one of you,

Sally Bendersky Schachner
