We were thrilled to attend the Meridian Poetry Festival last month.
There was such excitement and beauty in the air. Of course, Paul
Celan's great poetic gifts were the focus, but his Jewishness and
the Jewish history of Czernowitz were a significant presence throughout
the festival. The synagogue was digitally projected onto the
Cinema;
the Kletzmer band played on the Herrengasse; and an extraordinary
theatrical performance piece, based on Todesfugue, was attended by an
overflow audience. Can you imagine -- two to three hundred college-
age students at poetry readings?? Perhaps only in Czernowitz.
