I always thought "shul" came from the German Schule (school) and was used because the synagogue was also the cheder where kids learned..or at least were supposed to!! Cornel

The use of Shul instead of Schul is an influence of the "Litwickes"
the Jews from Lituania. They pronounce for example Boruch instead of
the Galizian and Czernowitzeer Burich. The Hebrew vowell "Vaw" is
pronounced as the English
"e" in evil in Czernowitz etc and as the two "oo" in root in
Lituania. Hence Schil in Czernowitz is Schul in Lituania.
