[Cz-L] A previous subject

Dear all
 I lost contact with the list for a period of 2 months. But thanks to =
the digest on our site (thanks again Jerome!) I was able to go through =
the prolific mail activity of our members and found a subject that =
always interested me - the origin of the Jews in Czernowitz and =
Bukowina. The main reason for this was the Jewish (Hebrew) name of my =
father - Ezra. This is a name seldom used by Ashkenazi Jews and much =
more widespread among Eastern Jews (Mainly from Iraq and Yemen). In my =
quest to find the reason of this name I came upon a paper from the 15th =
in century in which the head Rabbi (khakham bashi) in Constantinopol =
informs the Jewish community in Czernovitz that their request for a =
Rabbi and Slaughterer will soon be answered because he appointed a young =
Yemenite Rabbi who is on his way to Czernowitz. Moreover there is one of =
the Czernowitz old timers here by the name of Getter who researched the =
roots of his name because he did not find such a name among any European =
Jews. The only other Getter that he met was a young man Yemenite Jew. =
Just to give you another point of view to the problem. =
