Dear Czernowitzer,
On Oct. the 19th Yossi Eshet mentioned in his e-mail " a previous subject"
sent to this list, a document related to a correspondence, apparently from
the 15th century, between the Chief-Rabbi of Constantinople and the Jewish
community in Czernowitz. It is, of course, an information of very great
importance for tracing the history of Jewish ancestry in Czernowitz. I hope
Yossi will find more details about it and let us know more.
To this e-mail came a comment from Miriam Taylor with the remark that it is
possible that after the Austrian takeover of Bukovina Jews from the Ottoman
Empire came to Czernowitz. It was a repeated assessment in line with her
theory that organised Jewish life in Czernowitz started first around 1778.
This comment was not only irrelevant to Yossi Eshets mentioning 15th century
correspondence but even incorrect as can be understood from the different
documented sources published and refering to periods before 19th century,
published even on the internet, for those who would like to be more
informed.
Hardy Breier's e-mail of Oct. 24th regarding "Old Jewish cemetery" is
indirectly connected to previous e-mails regarding Jewish organised life in
Czernowitz as well as to Yossi Eshet's e-mail. .
The name also used in this context is "Turkish Jewish cemetery/graveyard"
and implies, of course, that this place started before the Austrian
takeover.
It was interesting to read Miriam Taylor's comment to this e-mail in which
she hopes that Hardy Breier could help find more details with regard to
those buried there.
The majority must have been buried there a very long time ago.It is perhaps
time to accept the documented facts about the existence of organised Jewish
life long before the Austrian takeover.
The combination between repeating assessments based on simplified wishful
thinking and a polite and silent majority has often resulted in a distorted
image of reality, something not unusual in many parts of the world.
The probable change of opinion is to be commended. A step in the right
direction can always widen our perception of our history and ultimately of
ourselves.
Wolf Terner.
