On the subject of the old Jewish cemetery:

I have no definite knowledge of the dates of the first burials in the old
Jewish cemetery, they may predate the Austrian period and they may not, but
they certainly predate 1860 or 1866, when the new Jewish cemetery was
established. They were made in a traditional Jewish folk-style and included
unique decorations.
In my previous message about this subject, I did not in any way allude to
either Ashkenazi or Sephardic Jews in Czernowitz or in the old Jewish
cemetery and I have no interest in continuing the debate about whether
Ashkenazi or Sephardic Jews constituted the majority of Czernowitz Jewry.

My interest is in preserving at least some of the tombstones from the old
Jewish cemetery, both because of their artistic value and because of the
information they may include.

Hardy has now sent us photographs of some of these old tombstones.
On my next trip to Chernivtsi, I will try to find them and have them placed
in the local Jewish museum.

If any of you know of other suitable museums or collections, which would be
interested in preserving these stones, please advise.

Mimi
