Transnistria is currently governed in a dictatorial manner by one family
which also engages in a variety of criminal activities.
This region was never prosperous, never had a democratically elected
government or benevolent rulers and was always a neglected backwater.
The people who returned to Czernowitz from Transnistria told many stories
about the prevailing conditions there.
