Czernowitzers...
The Documentation Centre of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania released in 1986/88/90 three volumes of "Sources an Testimonies Concerning the Jews in Romania".
The very first mention related to Czernowitz from the year 1542 is followed by many other testimonies from the years 1613 - 1792, out of which the following are most interesting:
[34/I] 1542. The instructions of Petru Rares to Avram of Banila, chief (staroste) of Cernauti and envoy to the court of Sigismund I, mention the debt of a Polish Jew to the Prince of Moldavia.
[39/II/2] 1762, July, Moldavia. R.J. Boscowich, travelling in the suite of an English diplomat from Constantinople to Poland, passes through Moldavia, describing certain towns [including Czernowitz] in which Jews live, too.
[83/II/2] 1774, May 13, Cernauti. The Jews in Cernauti receive from the Moldovian Divan the authorization to rebuild the synagogue destroyed by the czarist troops.
[194/II/2] 1786, February 25. Cernauti, General Enzenberg, the Governor of Bucovina, informs of the Jewish population's numerical decrease [714 families in 1782 down to 175 families in 1786].
[211/II/2] 1787, Cernauti. List of the house-owners in Cernauti. Out of the 414 properties registered in 1787, about 90 belonged to Jews. ... The eldest known tombstone of the Jewish Cemetery is dated 1718 (Encyclopedia Judaica, vol. V, p. 720).
Let me conclude this mail with the travel description of R.J. Boscowich from July 1762:
"...The city [Czernowitz] is located on the top of a hill, the Prut is flowing in the valley below within gunshot range. The locality is small, incorporating about two hundred houses; most of the inhabitants of the city are schismatic Greeks, but there are in that area many Jews as well, who are carrying on commerce, several of them acted as the host, inviting us to their houses."
Jews were hospitable! Best wishes to all of you!
