There is something irrationally magnetic about lists, particularly if something in their heading relates to you. Since 1927 was the year of my birth, I was sucked in and found myself not only looking for myself and my family but for neighbors, our doctors, and any surnames I could find.
Lo and behold, the results were exciting, nostalgic and insulting.

I was not there. I could reason on behalf of the census takers that the census may have been taken in May or July and I was born in September. But my father and mother were not on the list and my famous grandmother, Sali Gleitzman, was also not on the list. My paternal grandparents lived in Arad so I couldn't expect them to be there. Mother married a non-Czernowitzer. I saw a picture once of the Czernowitzer who had wooed her before dad came along. Oy! I'm so glad she married the out-of-towner.

I did find Dr. Frankel and Dr. Noe, and our next door neighbor, Isidor Greif; I even found Traian Popovici who was classified as a student at the time, and I found Joe Hirsh who taught us English in preparation for our emigration.

I recalled being infatuated with Joe's daughter, Pearl. I called her Perlutza. I was eleven and she was twelve and I told her that I would marry her when we grew up. I pointed out that her initials wouldn't have to change after marriage since our surnames both started with an "H."

She was a lovely girl. We left for Canada in late April of 1939. They left after we did, just in time. They settled in Australia.

Joe's brother, Henry Hirsh, and his family, spent the war years in India and Miriam (Mimi), Henry's daughter, met and married Oscar Gareh, none of the rare Jews in India; then they all settled in Toronto, too.

Some 40-odd years later, not long after I ended a thirty year marriage, I got a call from Mimi, inviting me to a dinner. Her cousin, Perlutza, my childhood sweetheart, was visiting from Australia. She was married now with several grown children and she brought her husband along who had that odd Cockney-like Australian accent. Pearl's mother had come along, too, a beautiful and charming woman who was a double for the famous actress, Helen Hayes.

It was a lovely evening, like being "home" again, and on my way back to my Toronto home, I said to myself, "Tibi," (I still call myself by my Czernowitzer name when I talk to myself) "Tibi, you had excellent taste when you were eleven years old."

Andy (Tibi)
