As a second generation "Die Stimme" subscriber and one of the dwindling
number of what I call "pre WW2 Jewish Bukowinians" I would like to state a
few facts (probably known to most of you). "Die Stimme" was founded 66 years
ago in what was at that time British ruled Palestine by a former prominent
Czernowitzer journalist - Dr. Elias Weinstein. Dr. Weinstein and all other
Bukowinian participants naturally continued to express themselves in their
mother language - German, (same as our member Mrs. Hedwig Brenner)
although most of them knew Hebrew and/or Romanian well enough too. I know
it's hard for most of us to understand what it meant to finance, write,
bring to print (a qualified profession by itself), publish, and distribute a
paper with such singular subjects that would interest Jewish Bukowinians
even before Israel was established and the waves of immigrants were not
still
there. Despite all the hardships along the years they kept it going. Along
the years some of them passed away (among them Dr.Weinstein) but there
always were others that carried on. All of them Bukowinian Jews that were
uprooted from their homes. Beside that they organized cultural, and social
activities thus becoming the WOBJ at times when there were no others
around. All that from the little apartment that belonged to Dr. Weinstein
(Which now also holds a small Library). I can tell you that when we arrived
in 1948 my parents were very glad to find a connection to people from back
home. So now has come the time when there is no one from this group of old
timers in their advanced age to carry on this project and the least we can
do is bow our heads with respect and thank them for the long years that they
did not let the heritage of the Bukowinian Jews to be forgotten. As I saw
our group grow in members and activity I hoped that maybe some time we'll
join forces in some of our activities with the WOBJ. Let's hope that our
member Arthur Rindner will find a way in which we can cooperate. Excuse the
long "Megileh" I just felt that a few facts should be made clear.
