To anyone who may be able to help a new member:

I guess the older we get the more we want to find out about where we came
from.

My grandfather, Isaac (or an equivalent name in either Yiddish, Ukrainian or
Hebrew) WEINSTEIN - or WAINSTEIN - was a pharmacist in Czernowitz. All I
know is that he emigrated with 3 of his children (Nathan, David, my father -
born in 1904 - and Joseph) to Argentina in the 1915-1925 time frame. His
son Samuel passed away in the Ukraine. His other 3 children Sima (married
Joseph Barpal from Odessa, who later became a famous Israeli person as the
founder of ZIM - Israel Shipping Lines), Leah and Jacob emigrated also
around 1918-1922 to Palestine. Jacob Wainstein (later TIROSHI in Hebrew) was
one of the founders of Solel-Bone, the original major construction company
in Israel.

Isaac's first wife Iojebed passed away in the Ukraine (probably around
1922-1925. As a result, every one of his children who had a daughter named
the girls after the grandmother. There are (were) 5 Iojebed' s. He
re-married and his second wife name was Rivkah (Rebecca) and they had 2 more
children, Abraham and Maria (Miriam), who also ended up in Argentina.
Although still alive, Maria is too old to communicate with, and Abraham
(BUMA) is also in his 80's and does not use e-mail.

Isaac Weinstein died either in 1939. That is why my name is Isaac. David
Barpal (Weinstein), my father, died in 1946. He took the name Barpal because
his brother in law, Joseph Barpal, got him some documents to escape with the
name David Barpal on them.

Recently I asked a nephew in Argentina to look up the grave (one with 2
people) of Isaac Wainstein and David Barpal (Wainstein) at the Cementerio de
Liniers, just on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. I remember seeing it as a
child and even years later on some visits. When he does he will send me a
digital picture of the grave, maybe there is some info there ? (year of
birth and place for Isaac, etc.)

I live in Florida. After growing up in Argentina, I moved to Israel in 1953,
served in the Israeli Air Force, Merchant Marine, etc., and have been in the
US since 1964.

Trying to find out more about the past, I am one of the last surviving
children of that (large)family. You can check me out on Google !

I am trying to prepare a family tree to leave to my children and
grandchildren. Thus my interest.

And if I find something, I would love to make a trip to Czernowitz next
summer. Probably on a motorcycle - starting in Germany or so. (Yes, I am 70+
and can still ride 12 hour days cross-country).

Many thanks,

Isaac (Itzik) Barpal
