In 1948 if you came to Haifa from the south you passed the British
military hospital camp of St.Luke's.
As Israel took over it became the main immigration center :
    Shaar Alya - Immigration Gate.
But most kept on calling it St Luke's or St Lux by the less initiated.
Story goes as the Transilvania lay in Haifa port the following
conversation goes on between a new immigrant on board and
a stevedore who at that time were all from Rumania:
Stevedore: " Spune-le sa te dea la St Lux !" (Tell them to place you
at St Lux).
      New immigrant : " N'am nevoie de lux - sa-mi dea o casa cu 2 camere si
bucatarie ( I dont need luxury - I'll settle for two room house with
kitchen)
  Very modest.
