Hardy describes the situation very well, at least it was so in my family.
My maternal grandfather, Saul Leib Steinmetz was the founder of the Poalei
Zion in Czernowitz, yet he was a small industrialist and reasonably wealthy.
My father was in the 1930ies a communist sympathizer, even though never a
member. At one time he hid for a friend, Communist pamphlets in our house.
My grandfather found them and insisted they be removed.
