When the German army retreated, they had on the Herrengasse a car
loaded with ammunition, which ran out of fuel. They exploded the
ammunition.
The explosion could be heard on the Schmidtgasse where we lived.
Our neighbor Werner Munster thought that they were bombing the city and
started throwing the luggage we had all packed in order to flee fast,
through the window. One of the Rucksacks fell on his mother who was
working in the garden. As far as I know, she was the only civilian hurt
in the retreat.
