Czernowitzers...

The New Year's edition of "Der Tag - The Day" (http://czernowitzdaily.blogspot.com/) is characterized by several articles (p. 1., 4., 9.) on a very prominent visitor at the turn of the year 1932: Henry Ludwig Mond, 2nd Baron Melchett, who spends a visit to Czernowitz in order to assign Czernowitz as site for the International Maccabiah Games in August 1933. At the zenith of the Great Depression the Maccabiah Games would have been a hopeful sign, both for Czernowitz and Romania.

Therefore Henry Ludwig Mond, 2nd Baron Melchett, was more than cordially received by King Carol II of Romania, Finance Minister Virgil Madgearu, Senator Max Ausschnitt, a vast number of Romanian officials and high representatives of the Jewish Community. As a matter of fact, the Maccabiah Games NEVER TOOK PLACE in Czernowitz, due to the violent anti-Semitic excesses at the beginning of the year 1933 in Czernowitz and Romania. A missed chance, but however read the full illustrated story regarding Henry Ludwig Mond at our Ehpes.com Blog

http://ehpes.com/blog1/2011/01/02/prominent-visitor-at-the-turn-of-the-year/

and keep in mind, that his father, Alfred Moritz Mond, was the first President of the Technion in Haifa in 1925 and founded the town of Tel Mond, now in Israel.

Enjoy the story around this eccentric and prominent visitor at the turn of the year in Czernowitz!
