In reply to Lydia:
I do remember in detail a number of events, which must have happened when I
was three years old or younger and even more events when I was four and
five. The reason I can be sure of the date of any event, is because we moved
from one house to another on given dates. In the summer of 1940, when the
Russians took control of Czernowitz, we moved from our own apartment on the
Schmidtgasse, to a rented house on the Blumengasse. That summer I was three
years old. In October 1941, when I was four, we went to the ghetto. In
December '41, or January '42 we moved in with friends who lived on the
Slowatzkigasse. In June 1942, during the renewed deportations, I was hidden
by Neighbors of our friends in the same building. When I remember an event
and visualize where it occurred, I can easily check when it occurred.
I can be sure that these are my own memories and not stories which my
parents told me, because I can visualize them and because I can recall
clearly, the feelings they evoked in me at the time. Mostly I remember
moments of great joy or fear, also moments of astonishment and occasions of
learning or understanding something new. Sometimes moments when the
grown-ups made a fuss over something.
