The ink was rationed and distributed on a periodic basis.
It came as violet granules we got meted out in improvised
paper envelopes (made from used copybook pages),
At home we mixed it with water to get ink.
There was also a shortage in books , so we copied the
lesson the teacher read from the only available book.
With pen and violet home- made ink .

We learned Yiddish from Eliezer Steinbarg's "Alef Beth", we wrote on a slate
tablet and then graduated to a lined notebook on which we wrote with pen and
ink. We carried the ink back and forth to school and as can be expected,
occasionally spilled it. In second grade they also started to teach us
Ukrainian. I can read and write Yiddish based on what I learned in 1944-45,
whatever Ukrainian they taught us, evaporated without leaving a trace.
